Roadside bomb kills Dutch soldier in Afghanistan

The Dutch Defense Ministry said one of its troops was killed and five were wounded by a roadside bomb in southern Afghanistan on Sunday. The fatal attack brings to 17 the number of Dutch troops killed in Afghanistan since August 2006, when the government took the unpopular step of sending 1,650 troops to serve with the NATO-led force. Dutch defense chief Gen. Peter van Uhm told reporters in Hague that the attack happened Sunday afternoon in a restive valley in the southern province of Uruzgan. Van Uhm said the soldier killed was 21-year-old Jos ten Brinke. One of the injured soldiers was in critical but stable condition while the other four suffered only slight injuries.
