A river of crude oil gushed through a suburban Vancouver neighborhood and flowed downhill to the ocean Tuesday after an accident broke open a pipeline.
The oil spill, which spewed a geyser that blackened lawns and greased the roadway, left a widening sheen on Burrard Inlet's waters and forced the evacuation of as many as 100 homes, radio station CKNW reported.
The pipeline, owned by Kinder Morgan, carries crude oil from oil tankers to a refinery.
Burnaby Mayor Derek Corrigan said the line burst while city crews were working on a road upgrade, though the Royal Canadian Mounted Police said the rupture happened after a collision involving a vehicle.
