Russia says Georgian attack negated UN resolutions

Russia's UN ambassador says Georgia's attack on South Ossetia negated UN resolutions that Moscow supported that guaranteed the territorial integrity of Georgia.
Vitaly Churkin said Georgian President Mikhail Saakashvili's action created a "new reality" that justifies Russia's decision to recognize the independence of South Ossetia and another separatist Georgian province, Abkhazia.
Moscow's announcement drew strong criticism from the United States and the European Union but Churkin said Tuesday he didn't think Russia's recognition would lead to a new Cold War with the West though he said he expects a difficult period ahead.
