President Dmitry Medvedev says Russian troops sent into Georgia's breakaway province of South Ossetia must force Georgia into a cease fire.
Medvedev says Russian forces also have a mission to protect civilians in South Ossetia. Many of the region's residents hold Russian passports.
Medvedev made the statement Saturday at a meeting with his defense minister.
Georgia launched a massive offensive to regain control over the breakaway province. Russia has close ties with the province and responded by sending in armed convoys.
