The United Nations mission in Afghanistan said Tuesday that the Afghan government had asked a UN official to leave the country because he was "detrimental" to Afghanistan's national security.
Aleem Siddique, a spokesman for the UN mission, said the UN employee had traveled to the volatile southern province of Helmand on Monday along with a member of the European Commission.
Other officials told The Associated Press the Afghan government has asked a UN employee and a European Commission employee to leave Afghanistan.
"We do not believe there is any basis for any UN official to need to leave the country, and we're making this position clear to the government of Afghanistan," Siddique said.
