Two US men sentenced for murder of aspiring British politician

Two men who pleaded guilty to robbing and killing an aspiring British politician were sentenced Friday to 52 years and 37 years in prison by a Washington judge.
Jeffrey Rice and Christopher Piper pleaded guilty in May to second-degree murder and robbery for the July 2006 death of Alan Senitt, 27, in the upscale Georgetown section of the capital. Senitt's throat was slashed as he tried to protect his female companion from robbery and sexual assault.
District of Columbia Superior Court Judge Neal Kravitz sentenced Rice to 52 years and Piper to 37.
At the sentencing, both men apologized and said they had not intended for the robbery to end in murder. But the victim's mother, Karen Senitt, urged the judge to impose the maximum sentence, saying there was no way to justify what happened.
