UK government to propose longer detention for terrorist suspects

The government is releasing proposals on Thursday for extending the maximum time that terrorist suspects may be detained without charge.
Prime Minister Gordon Brown has been backing an extension beyond the current 28 days because of the complexity of some terrorism cases.
Whatever the government proposes, it is certain to face a fight in Parliament. The main opposition parties - the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats - oppose any extension.
The director of public prosecutions, Sir Ken Macdonald, and former Attorney General Lord Goldsmith have both questioned the case for extending the limit.
