US: 5 to 10 dead in US strike in southern Somalia

The US killed five to 10 individuals in this week's attack on a target in southern Somalia believed to be associated with al-Qaida, a US intelligence official said. The official, who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the operation's sensitivity, said a small number of others present, perhaps four or five, at the targeted area were also wounded. The US was still trying to figure out who they were - a process that may require a mix of intelligence and getting personnel to the scene. A Defense Department spokesman said Tuesday the US military attacks against al-Qaida leaders in Somalia were based on credible intelligence. He would not address whether the operations were continuing.
