US authorizes $5 million in aid to Cuba

The United States is providing $1.5 million to relief organizations helping Cuba's recovery after Hurricanes Ike and Gustav, US officials said Monday. But so far, Cuba has rejected any direct aid from the US government. The United States says that it has authorized $5 million in total aid, including the money it has committed to the relief organizations. Henrietta Fore, the administrator of the US Agency for International Development, said that Cuba rejected on Sunday a plane load of humanitarian supplies worth $348,000. "We are hopeful that they will reconsider this offer of humanitarian aid," she said.
