US undersecretary of state to visit Turkey Tuesday and Wednesday

US Undersecretary of State Nicholas Burns will be in Turkey Tuesday and Wednesday for talks with the new Turkish government, the State Department said Monday. The department announcement said Burns will "discuss a range of strategic issues" Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan, whose government won a second mandate in general elections in July. Also on their agenda, the statement said, will be for Burns to "reaffirm the great importance the US attaches to our alliance with Turkey." In addition to meeting with officials in Ankara, the capital, Burns will travel to Istanbul for meetings and to have iftaar, the Ramadan meal that breaks the daily fast at night, with members of Parliament.
