The Holy See and the United Arab Emirates, a mainly Muslim country with a large number of Roman Catholic foreign workers, established diplomatic ties Thursday.
The Vatican said more than a million Christians - most of them Catholic - are estimated to work in the Emirates and that it is awaiting authorization to build new churches. There are already seven Catholic churches in the country.
