The Vatican on Monday confirmed Pope Benedict XVI's trip to Turkey that has been overshadowed by his remarks on Islam and violence, outlining for the first time the itinerary of the Nov. 28-Dec. 1 visit.
The pontiff will travel to Ankara, Istanbul, Ephesus and Izmir during his first visit to a predominantly Muslim country. The exact program for the visit will be announced later, the Vatican said, but the pilgrimage will begin in Ankara, the Turkish capital, and then take the pontiff to Izmir, a port city near Ephesus, which is an ancient Christian community and lastly, to Istanbul, the metropolis straddling Europe and Asia.
