Virginia expresses 'profound regret' for slavery

The state General Assembly took the first step Wednesday toward expressing "profound regret" for slavery. Among those voting for the measure was Del. Frank D. Hargrove, who angered black leaders across the United States two weeks ago by saying blacks "should get over" slavery. Hargrove said he could support the resolution because it shows regret "without apologizing for anything." How to address the United States' history of slavery is an ongoing issue, with some people continuing to argue for reparations, or payment, as well as an official apology, especially in the South.
