White House criticizes Congress for failing to pass eavesdropping law

The White House is criticizing Congress for failing to extend a law allowing the government to eavesdrop on phone calls and e-mails in the United States in cases of suspected terrorist activity.
President George W. Bush plans to make remarks about the matter during an appearance at the White House.
The Senate passed a bill that Bush supports. It includes retroactive protection from lawsuits for telecommunications companies that cooperated with government eavesdropping following the September 11 attacks. The House of Representatives has not passed the measure, and the law expires at Saturday.
The White House says the failure to pass the bill risks losing the cooperation of the telecommunications industry. And the White House says that could put Americans in danger.
