Some 40,000 abortions are carried out in Israel every year.
The Health Ministry approves around half of them - for women who have been raped or for those where a defect was found in the fetus.
Private doctors preformed the rest of the abortions, Israel radio reported Tuesday morning, without the supervision of the state and at the cost of thousands of shekels.
Meretz MK Zehava Galon was promoting a law proposal, which would obligate the state to fund any and all abortion requests.
It is estimated that the cost of the proposed law would run to some NIS thirteen million per year.
