Knesset members from the Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee slammed the government Tuesday in light of a new report presented by Maj.-Gen. (res.) Doron Almog.
The report, which focused on the events surrounding the abduction of soldiers along the northern border on July 12, 2006, was the seventh report regarding the recent war with Lebanon that the committee has heard.
"We have heard report after report which points to the fact that criminal behavior was being perpetrated on all levels - from isolated battalions to the chief of staff," said MK Ran Cohen (Meretz).
Cohen added that the IDF showed negligence and "criminal judgment" in the way the bases along the border were being managed.
One part of the report showed that Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz was unaware of the on-the-ground situation in the northern bases. It also showed that the war could have been prevented if the northern bases had been better prepared for a kidnapping scenario.
"Halutz did not know basic things. The reports are important, and we should draw conclusions from the results of the reports," said MK Silvan Shalom (Likud). "The Almog report shows that Halutz was ignorant of what was going on."
