As Israel's school pupils returned to the classroom and university students were enjoying the remainder of their summer vacation, the state attorney's office decided on Sunday to indict Beit Shemesh mayor Daniel Vaknin on charges of fraudulently obtaining a bachelors' degree in psychology from the Israeli branch of the US-based Burlington College.
According to a charge sheet drafted in March by the state attorney's office, Vaknin obtained a degree in psychology by copying the majority of the work he submitted to fulfill his degree requirements, the Justice Ministry said in a press release.

Moreover, after attaining his degree in such a manner, Vaknin went on to submit his candidacy for office in an Institute for Higher Education, the ministry said.
Vaknin said in reaction to the charges that he would be proven innocent. He added that the university allowed joint work, which he said he had done with his sister. The college in question is the same one where Shas MK Yair Peretz submitted papers which he later confessed he had not written.
Vaknin's indictment will be handed down by the Jerusalem Magistrate's Court this week.
