A day after Menahem and Nina Visler were killed in front of their children in a collision near Tzur Yigal in the Sharon region, police said Sunday they were investigating the driver of the second car, Awani Jabara, on suspicion of negligent manslaughter. According to eyewitnesses, Jabara, a Taiba resident, drove through a red light and slammed into the car carrying the five members of the Visler family. Menahem and Nina were killed instantly. Their oldest child, 10-year-old Arielle, was seriously injured and her two brothers were lightly injured. On Sunday, family members took the boys to their parents' funeral, but Arielle remained hospitalized in moderate condition. According to reports, Jabara, 47, has a record of 30 traffic offenses, including reckless driving. Also on Sunday, the Kfar Saba Magistrate's Court rejected a police request to extend Jabara's remand by five days. Judge Clara Raginiano rebuking the police representative for asking that the remand hearing be held without the defendant present. Raginiano said the police could not arrest Jabara, who was lightly to moderately injured in the crash, without the permission of his doctor, who was unable to attend the hearing. Israel Radio reported that the judge advised the officer to release the Jabara at 10 p.m. on Sunday night, after 24 hours in custody, and to call him for a hearing on Monday morning. Meanwhile, MK Gilad Erdan (Likud) submitted a bill on Sunday according to which if a driver commits three serious traffic offences within 15 years, his license will be permanently canceled, unless a court rules otherwise. Examples of serious offenses as defined by the bill include driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs, illegally driving through a train crossing, and driving with a suspended license.
