EU urges Israel to remove roadblocks

The European Union urged Israel Tuesday to remove roadblocks in the Palestinian territories and to stop settlement activity. French Foreign Ministry spokesman Frederic Desagneaux said the settlements were "one of the main obstacles to the peace process. ... We condemn settlements." France currently holds the rotating EU presidency. Desagneaux said international donors had urged the removal of roadblocks in the Palestinian territories, saying they hurt Palestinian economic development. He also told reporters that $1.4 billion had been given so far to the Palestinian government after an international donor's conference in Paris last year raised more than $7 billion in pledges of aid through 2010.
