Despite the termination of Israel Airports Authority Director-General Gabi Ophir two months ago, safety remains a problematic issue at Ben Gurion Airport, with yet another accident occurring on Thursday.
At approximately 5 p.m. an El Al Boeing 747 that had flown in from New York landed at Israel's international airport and collided with a cart loaded with crates that had been left in its lane. The plane, which was not traveling fast, was approaching a terminal sleeve in preparation to unload its passengers.
None of the passengers or crewmembers were injured. Ben Gurion Airport opened an investigation into the incident. Investigators will examine how the trolley was left in the lane and why both the ground navigator and the pilots failed to notice it.
The airport announced recently that they planned to install a new runway monitoring system that would prevent such accidents from occurring.
