An Fatah Party activist died Thursday of wounds he sustained the previous night in a shootout with Hamas gunmen in the northern Gaza Strip, Palestinian security officials said. The shooting in Beit Lahiya began when Hamas gunmen shot at a security commander from Fatah, security said. The Fatah gunmen returned fire, the security said. Six people were injured, they said. The clash came as Palestinian Authority Prime Minister Ismail Haniyeh of Hamas and Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas of Fatah ironed out the final details of an agreement between the movements to share power. The sides hoped the deal would end months of fighting that have left more than 140 dead in the Gaza Strip and persuade the international community to renew financial aid.
