Mordechai Eliyahu undergoes emergency bypass surgery, remains in 'serious but stable' condition.

Former Sephardic chief rabbi Mordechai Eliyahu was admitted to Jerusalem's Sha'arei Tzedek hospital Friday night after suffering a heart attack.
At approximately 2 a.m. on Saturday morning an emergency response team was called to the rabbi's house in Jerusalem, due to complaints of chest pains and shortness of breath. Paramedics diagnosed Eliyahu as having suffered a heart attack.
He underwent emergency bypass surgery, is in recovery and, as of Sunday morning, remains in a serious but stable condition at Sha'arei Tzedek Hospital in Jerusalem.
Eliyahu served as chief rabbi of Israel between 1983 and 1993, before which he had served as the chief rabbi of Beersheba for four years, and had been elected to the Supreme Rabbinical Court in Jerusalem, a position he continued to hold during his term as chief rabbi of Israel and through the present.
