Israel should completely cut off all water and electricity supplies to Gaza, Maj.-Gen. (res.) Giora Eiland, former head of the National Security Council, told Israel Radio Monday. Eiland added that the point of such a move would not be to punish the residents of the strip but rather to apply pressure on the Hamas government. The Hamas government was the first government that not only controlled the goings-on in the Strip but also considered itself responsible for what transpired there, he said, which was why such sanctions could be effective. Eiland warned that if Israel did not take such steps it would be forced into an extensive ground operation in Gaza.
