One of the three fatalities in an horrific car crash near Ben-Gurion Airport early Friday was a soldier on leave, Channel 10 reported Friday evening.
Gai Oronsky of Ashkelon, who served in the Golani Brigade, died along with two of his friends when the car they were driving hit a concrete pole near the airport on Route 1.
A Magen David Adom team that arrived on the scene pronounced the two young men and a woman dead and evacuated another young woman to Assaf Harofe Hospital.
The car was split in half by the impact, and the pieces of the vehicle were strewn along the road over 200 meters, Cmdr. Yaakov Cohen of Israel Police told Israel Radio.
"We are talking about very high speeds that caused the car to be split in half," Cohen said. "We are currently in the preliminary stages of investigating the circumstances of the accident and identifying the bodies."
Cohen would not speculate as to whether the driver was inebriated but did rule out the possibility that the condition of the road had precipitated the accident.
The Jerusalem-Tel Aviv highway was "comfortable" to drive on, he said, with wide lanes and good lighting.
There were reports of congested traffic in the Jerusalem-bound lanes of the road following the accident Friday morning.
Meanwhile, a 31-year-old biker was seriously injured when he collided with a street light on Se'adya Gaon Street in Herzliya. The man was evacuated to Beilinson Hospital by a Magen David Adom team. Police were investigating the accident.
