Green Movement transforms into political party ahead of February elections

The Green Movement transformed into a political party this week ahead of national elections scheduled for February. Founders Alon Tal and Eran BenYemini have recruited other notable environmentalists as well as leaders from other fields such as Gershon Baskin, head of IPCRI. Spokesman Rami Livni told The Jerusalem Post Wednesday that they were also talking to leading figures outside the political sphere. There has also been speculation that Michael Melchior's Meimad faction might be interested in splitting with Labor and joining up with the Green Movement. The new party will compete with the ten-year-old Greens in the race for what polls predict could be two Knesset seats.
