Maj.-Gen. Dan Harel took over as Deputy Chief of General Staff on Monday in place of Maj.-Gen. Moshe Kaplinsky, who had held the post for the past two-and-a-half years.
Harel recently returned to Israel after serving as Israel's military attache in the United States for the past two years. Harel oversaw the disengagement from the Gaza Strip in 2005 as OC Southern Command and previously served as the IDF's Chief Artillery Officer.
Kaplinsky, who served in his previous post as OC Central Central Command, is scheduled to travel to the US to serve as a research associate at a think tank. He might also attend a prestigious business management course at Harvard University.
Kaplinsky began his term as deputy chief of staff under Lt.-Gen. Dan Halutz and served in the post during the Second Lebanon War, whose outcome ruined his chances of replacing Halutz following his resignation in January. One of Harel's first tasks will be overseeing implementation of the IDF's new multi-year plan concluded last month by Chief of General Staff Lt.-Gen. Gabi Ashkenazi.
