The commander's accomplice was also shot and wounded, while several other Palestinians were hurt in the operation that sparked off heavy exchanges of fire.
Later, a booby-trapped car with a 12 kilogram bomb set by the group exploded in the town about 200 meters from troops, but no one was wounded.
IDF sappers then performed a controlled explosion on another car filled with explosives weighing 24 kilograms.
Troops then neutralized a third explosive devise, which was set to be detonated by means of a telephone.

The university is considered a Hamas stronghold. The building, where the Hamas-dominated student council meets, was heavily damaged.
