IDF to shorten men's service to two years

The IDF reported at a press conference Monday evening that the obligatory term of service for men, currently three years, would be shortened to two years by July 2010. Officials said that the decision would create greater equality in the army by giving men and women the same term of service. The reduction in service will not apply to soldiers on courses with shorter terms of service. The reduction will take place gradually, with the first reduction applying to all soldiers who will be drafted in July 2006. Each incremental reduction will be subject to approval depending on Israel's security situation.
