Israel Police chief surprised by Acre riots

Following assessments with Acre police officers in the wake of two days of violence between Jews and Arabs in the coastal city, Israel Police Chief Insp.-Gen. David Cohen admitted that security forces were caught by surprise by the outbreak of hostilities on the eve of Yom Kippur. "I am aware of the evidence and witness to the consequences," Cohen said, alluding to the widespread damage caused by rioting mobs. "This is the kind of event that must not happen. "It is hard for me to assess whether the incident was nationalistically motivated or simply an act of hooliganism; we will know this later on," he continued. "I wish to stress that the Acre Police Department prepared for this Yom Kippur in accordance with recent years and we had no information indicating that such as incident was about to occur.
