The Foreign Ministry on Tuesday strongly rejected criticism that not enough had been done to prevent the extradition of IDF Lieutenant-Colonel (res.) Yair Klein from Russia to Colombia.
In 2001 Klein was convicted in his absence and sentenced to 10 years in jail for training guerrilla fighters in the South American country.
The ministry said that two months ago, Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni met her Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov and asked him to transfer Klein to Israel.
Klein lawyer, Mordehai Tzivin, is expected to appeal against his client's extradition at the Supreme Court in Moscow.
