The Knesset Finance Committee decided Monday to freeze former president Moshe Katsav's retirement benefits until the "outcome of his case becomes clear." The High Court of Justice still has to rule on the legitimacy of the plea bargain deal that was offered to Katsav by Attorney-General Menahem Mazuz in the sexual crimes case against the former president. Katsav's benefits include an office with two secretaries, a car and driver and an apartment paid for by the state for seven years following the end of his term - all worth some NIS 1 million a year. Meanwhile, the committee approved an increase to the budget allocated for President Shimon Peres's state trips abroad by 1.5 million shekels. Peres's travel budget was increased from NIS 590,000 to NIS 2.09 million and it is a portion of the NIS 3.5 million addition to the president's budget which was approved by the committee.
