Knesset c'tee okays defense budget of NIS 50.2b

A joint Knesset committee on Sunday approved the defense budget for 2007, which stands at NIS 47.8 billion. Only three of the 12 committee members showed up for the vote. Committee head Tzahi Hanegbi (Kadima) and Meretz MK Avshalom Vilan voted in favor of the budget; MK Effi Eitam (NU/NRP) voted against it, demanding that billions of shekels be added. During the previous meeting, the committee delayed bringing the budget proposal to a vote, and requested an emergency meeting with the Prime Minister Ehud Olmert for the clarification of several issues including the funding of high trajectory weapons.
