Residents of the Samaria community of Shavei Shomron are in shock following the murder of local resident Meir Chai, 45, who was shot dead Thursday in a terror attack driving along Route 57 in the northern West Bank, a spokesperson for the settlement said. The spokesperson said that Chai, the father of seven children between the ages of eight months and 18 years, was a very well-liked and respected man who contributed a great deal to the community. He said that residents "are very shocked, hurt, and angry." Chai was known locally for helping teach torah studies to local students in Shavei Shomron and reportedly showed special kindness towards children. Spokesman Nachson Yeshurun added that residents of the community had expressed their anger "not only at losing a friend" but also at the government's lifting of West Bank roadblocks to ease Palestinian freedom of movement, which many say led directly to Thursday's attack, and allowed the shooter to evade arrest.
