Prime Minister Ehud Olmert told ministers during Sunday's cabinet meeting that he would draw up his own plan to investigate the problems that arose during the war and would consult with Attorney General Menachem Mazuz on the matter. According to Olmert, the decision would be reached within days. For a Jerusalem Online video of events click here Internal Security Minister Avi Dichter announced that he was in favor of establishing a committee whose authority and members would be determined by the prime minister. Labor ministers Ophir Paz-Pines and Eitan Cabel said a State (judicial) Commission should be established. Last week, Defense Minister Amir Peretz announced the establishment of a commission headed by former IDF chief of general staff, Lt.-Gen. Amnon Lipkin-Shahak. However, the commission was only charged with examining the handling of the war by the military echelon. Peretz's decision to appoint a team, whose mandate did not spread beyond that of the military, leaving the political echelon untouched, was strongly criticized. Critics have accused the army and government of overseeing a messy war with an unclear outcome and wavering when key decisions needed to be made. Meanwhile, the Shahak Commission held its first meeting on Sunday morning. The commission will formulate the list of witnesses that will be called to testify. It was given three weeks to submit its findings.
