A Palestinian man was arrested Tuesday overnight on allegations that he had locked up his children for over 20 years in a basement under his house, Army Radio reported Wednesday. The man, residing near Hebron, is a father of two children suffering from mental disabilities. He explained that he was "ashamed" of his children and preferred to hide them rather than let his acquaintances mock him for fathering "abnormal" children, as he described them. The children, a brother and sister in their thirties, were found in a dark and moldy basement, where they were held by the father. The children's mother died several years ago and the father remarried. His children were taken to a psychiatric institute. Palestinian police reported that the man was caught in the course of a pursuit of arms and drug dealers in the village of Beit Awa west of Hebron.
