Vice Premier Shimon Peres expressed support on Sunday for Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's intention to meet Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas even before captured IDF soldier Cpl. Gilad Shalit was released.
However, Peres told Army Radio that there would be no negotiation over a final peace agreement with the Palestinians at this time, saying that Olmert would talk to Abbas only to try and secure the kidnapped soldier's release. "The prime minister will stress to the PA chairman that no Palestinian prisoners will be released by Israel before Shalit is freed," said Peres.
