Police: Drunk drivers must be accompanied from custody by relative

Israel Police Central District chief Cmdr. Nissim Mor on Sunday ordered traffic police not to release intoxicated drivers from custody without the accompaniment of a relative. The directive comes after a pedestrian was killed on Route 4 Thursday following his release from custody where he had been held for allegedly driving under the influence of alcohol. He was run over next to where police had stopped his car. National Traffic Police spokesman Doron Ben Amu said in response that traffic police had operated according to the correct procedure. He claimed they had confiscated the vehicle, released the driver in an inhabited area and informed his employer that the car had been transferred to the Kfar Saba Police parking lot.
