The police were limiting Muslim worshippers going to Friday prayers on the Temple Mount, out of concern for possible disruptions.
Only men above the age of 40 with Israeli identification cards were going to be allowed to enter the compound.
No limitations were being imposed on female worshippers.
Extra security personnel were stationed throughout the Old City of Jerusalem.
