A criminal investigation has been opened against Gil Pensioners Party MK Yitzhak Ziv, Cmdr. Yohanan Danino, head of the police's investigations and intelligence division, announced on Monday. A party activist submitted an official complaint against Ziv over the weekend, alleging that he sexually assaulted her approximately one year ago.
Danino assigned the case to the National Economic Crimes Unit, which also made headlines Monday with its breakthrough on the National Insurance Institute corruption scandal.
The complainant, R., arrived at the NECU's headquarters over the weekend to submit her official complaint.
The woman, 62, came forward two weeks ago with allegations that Ziv had assaulted her against her will at his house, which had been undergoing renovations at the time.
According to the plaintiff, the MK hugged her from behind when they reached his bedroom, lifted up her shirt, grabbed her breasts and threw her down onto the bed. She said she had tried to fight him off and eventually succeeded in slipping away from his grasp and fleeing the house.
Police said that Ziv, who has dismissed the accusations as "political revenge," is expected to be questioned soon by NECU detectives.
The 69-year-old Ziv serves as deputy Knesset speaker and is a member of the Knesset's Economics Committee and Constitution, Law and Justice Committee. He is a widower, has three children and lives in Ramat Gan.
