A border policeman was killed early Wednesday morning when he was hit by a military vehicle at Ramat Yishai Junction. According to a preliminary investigation, the officer, Hyman Hanipas, had apparently pulled a car over for a routine check when the military jeep veered from its lane and hit him. Magen David Adom paramedics who arrived on the scene were unable to resuscitate the officer and pronounced him dead. The driver of the jeep, a 33-year-old career soldier, was apparently drunk and had fallen asleep at the wheel, police said. According to reports, he was driving back from a celebration in the North. The driver was arrested and was expected to be brought before a Nazareth judge for a remand extension hearing. Hanipas, 31, from Shfaram, was survived by a wife and two children. In March, policeman Yigal Cohen was killed by a passing vehicle at the entrance to Mitzpe Ramon. Police suspect that he was intentionally hit by a car he tried to pull over.
