A delegation of rabbinic authorities met with Muslim clerics and PA President Mahmoud Abbas in Ramallah on Tuesday to discuss the release of kidnapped IDF soldier Cpl. Gilad Shalit. MK Rabbi Michael Melchior (Labor), reporting on the meeting, told Channel 2 that Abbas wants to be the Palestinian president who signs a peace deal with Israel. "Both sides want peace," he said, but neither side knows how to achieve it. Melchior added that Abbas told the delegation that Shalit's release was imperative. He said Abbas understood that as long as Shalit was still in captivity, there could be no progress towards peace. "The problem is that we both know that unfortunately, this is not in the Palestinian president's hands," he lamented.
