A group of senior police commanders approaching retirement age have been urged by Israel Police Chief Insp.-Gen. Dudi Cohen to step down early, police officials said Wednesday.
The police commissioner's proposal has met with opposition from the group.
Army Radio reported that some of the lieutenant-commanders believed the State Comptroller should look into the matter and would appeal to the High Court of Justice if need be.
Police commanders are required to retire at 57, and most of the police brass in question are approaching that age, the officials said.
They had hoped to be promoted to commanders before their retirement, even if they had only a short time left in service.
Another police spokesman said Wednesday that the police chief was acting in accordance with long-term organizational and operational planning.
The row comes at a time when the police are facing difficulty enlisting new recruits and public confidence in them is waning.
