Russian FM pledges policy continuity under new president

Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has assured Israeli leaders that his country's foreign policy won't change when there's a new president. Lavrov met Thursday with Prime Minister Ehud Olmert and President Shimon Peres. He told reporters after both meetings that Russia's Middle East policy will remain the same under President Dmitry Medvedev. He was elected this month to replace Vladimir Putin, who will stay on as Russia's prime minister. Lavrov said Israel and Russia have some common goals, like fighting terrorism.
