US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice has asked Prime Minister Ehud Olmert to release imprisoned Tanzim leader Marwan Barghouti as soon as possible, the Saudi newspaper Okaz reported Wednesday.
According to Israel Radio, the report said that Rice argued that Barghouti is very popular among the Palestinians, and the only Fatah representative who could successfully topple the Hamas-led government.
The report has not been confirmed by any American, Palestinian, or Israeli source.
