Shendar: Leading Israeli officials linked to organized crime

Outgoing state attorney tells Channel 1 that State Attorney's Office, law enforcement establishment show "no one is above the law."

"There is a link between organized crime and leading Israeli officials," outgoing state attorney Eran Shendar said on Sunday. In an interview with Channel 1, Shendar added, however, that the State Attorney's Office and law enforcement establishment showed that "no one is above the law." He said that Prime Minister Ehud Olmert must decide whether to suspend himself due to the ongoing criminal probes against him and said that the investigations had become "public discourse." Shendar went on to say that he believed Attorney General Menahem Mazuz should stay in his role even if the High Court of Justice intervenes in the plea bargain reached in the sexual crimes case against former president Moshe Katsav. Shendar continued by saying that he would be "surprised" if the Israel Tax Authority scandal ends without any indictments.
