In the year since Gilad Schalit was kidnapped along the Gaza border, his parents have spent countless hours circling the globe for meetings with diplomatic officials and fundraising events in an attempt to bring him home. All of that travel has come out of their own funds, and out of donations.
On Sunday, MK Yisrael Hasson (Israel Beiteinu) presented a bill that would make the state responsible for the Schalit family's expenses. According to the bill, the defense minister would be directly responsible for authorizing expenses for families of kidnapped soldiers to travel and meet with officials to try and secure the release of their children.
The families of Ehud Goldwasser and Eldad Regev, who were kidnapped along the northern border 11 months ago, joined the Schalit family in welcoming the bill.
"The trips these families take abroad are a national undertaking, not a private whim. Over the course of the past year, we have learned that these direct meetings between world leaders and the families of the abducted soldiers are indescribably more important than a meeting with any statesman could be," said Hasson.
