UN envoy: Egypt reports progress in Shalit talks

October 20, 2006 07:15

UN Middle East envoy Alvaro de Soto said Friday that an Egypt delegation reported reaching an agreement with Hamas on the release of Gilad Shalit, but said his captors wanted more guarantees, Israel Radio reported. De Soto warned that violence in the Gaza Strip and the closure imposed on it create very volatile conditions that put both the Palestinians and Israel in danger. The diplomat said a PA unity government would be the only way to block the path to anarchy in Gaza.
