City acts against owners lax on smoking

Haifa has begun its first legal actions under the recently introduced laws making owners responsible for controlling smoking on their premises.

The Haifa Municipality has begun its first 10 legal actions under the recently introduced laws making owners responsible for controlling smoking on their premises, reports Yediot Haifa. The new laws prohibit smoking in public places such as pubs, nightclubs and shops, and make owners responsible for removing smokers, imposing fines of up to NIS 67,300 on those who allow smoking on their premises. According to the report, since the laws came into effect last November, the city has been on a publicity campaign, merely warning owners of their responsibilities. But now it has begun to take action to enforce the law, issuing lawsuits against 10 of them. The report did not say when the cases would come before the courts.
