2 people killed in bombings at Algerian train station

Two bombs exploded Sunday at a train station east of Algeria's capital Sunday, killing a French citizen and his Algerian driver, and injuring several others, a security official said. The French citizen, working on a project to repair the rails at the station in Beni Amrane, just over 100 kilometers east of the capital, was targeted by a bomb as he was leaving the work site by car, the security official said. The device appeared to have been operated by remote control. A second bomb exploded minutes later as rescue workers arrived at the site and was also apparently triggered from a distance. The second bombing caused injuries, but the exact number of people wounded was not immediately clear, said the official. There was no immediate claim of responsibility. Algeria's al-Qaida affiliate, al-Qaida in Islamic North Africa, is known to be active in the area.
