Palestinian Authority Chairman Mahmoud Abbas has re-appointed a retired former head of general security in the West Bank, Palestinian sources in the chairman's office reported Saturday.
The move comes as part of an attempt by Abbas to preempt a Hamas takeover of the armed militias, Israel Radio reported.
Ismail Jaber will have authority over all security services in the West Bank except three units that will remain under Hamas control.
Jaber resigned from his post as Yasser Arafat's security chief in 2004.
